President Viktor Yanukovych assures he will not interfere with the work of any Ukrainian courts, he wrote in a letter-reply to President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic.

"The judicial system of Ukraine is independent and impartial in its work, and is guided solely by the Constitution and laws of Ukraine. I cannot and will not interfere with the work of Ukrainian courts. If I do it now, there will be significant problems. I consider political or any other interference in the work of courts unacceptable," President Yanukovych wrote in his letter to President Klaus.

Earlier, President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus had wrote a letter to President Yanukovych, stating that while he had no reason not to trust Ukraine’s justice system or question the independence of Ukrainian courts, he would like to make sure that in the case of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko there is no political process or personal and political differences being settled.

In turn, President Yanukovych said that none of the pending litigations in Ukraine is politically motivated: "Not a single pending litigation involving former public servants is or can be politically motivated. As guarantor of the Constitution of Ukraine I am responsible for it personally. And I am convinced that for every citizen of Ukraine it is important now that all the citizens are equal before the law, and the court as an independent branch of government being able to issue fair verdict."

The President said that systemic reforms in all areas have been started in Ukraine, including in the criminal justice system.

"Undoubtedly, our country’s criminal justice system that remained from the Soviet era needs reform. That is why we have started reforming the judicial system of Ukraine to create a modern transparent system of the rule of law. I hope that the countries and organizations that have expressed their concerns would help us to carry out the necessary reforms," reads the letter.

Viktor Yanukovych assured that Ukraine has chosen the irreversible path of strengthening European principles. "I would like to assure you that my activities as President of Ukraine, as well as the work of our country’s executive power, are aimed at strengthening in Ukraine the norms and principles that govern the European community: the rule of law, protection of human rights, democratic development," the President of Ukraine said.
