The government took a decision to raise minimum wholesale and retail prices for alcoholic beverages produced in Ukraine by 25-50%, First Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Vadym Kopylov told journalists by results of the Cabinet's meeting on Wednesday.

"The government rose prices for alcohol, a price for vodka was 17.96 UAH, it will be 26.10 UAH, cognac three stars was 26.32 UAH, it will be 33.08 UAH, wine was 12 UAH - will be 18 UAH. Those are minimum prices," he said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that "this (raising of minimum prices) will allow decreasing the shadow market and protecting people from forged and often dangerous for the health alcoholic products."

The resolution will come into force since the day of its publication.

As UKRINFORM reported, according to Ukrhorilka Association, still in late April, producers stood for raising the minimum retail price for vodka from 17.96 UAH to 26.10 UAH/0.5 liter bottle.

The need for the revision of the minimum price level was dictated by a growth of prices for main components that form the production prime cost of alcoholic beverages.

The minimum prices for alcohol were introduced in late October 2008, as requested by alcohol producing companies.
