President Viktor Yanukovych has instructed Prosecutor General of
Ukraine Viktor Pshonka and Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov to
conduct a comprehensive, full, and objective investigation in the
shortest possible time of an armed attack on Obozrevatel Internet
publication journalist Anatoliy Shariy. The President has also submitted
the open letter he had received on July 13 from the Obozrevatel
journalists team requesting him to take the case under his personal
supervision to the Interdepartmental Working Group for Analyzing
Observation of the Freedom of Speech and Protection of Journalists
Legislation.
The letter informs of an armed attack on
journalist Anatoly Shariy, committed in the night of July 13. Just
before the attack, the journalist has been investigating the activity of
a gambling machines club. On July 13, his car was fired upon by unknown
individuals. The journalist was not harmed.
Based on the
fact, the Interior Ministry’s Solomyanskyi District Department in Kyiv
has instituted criminal proceedings under Article 115 of the Criminal
Code of Ukraine (attempted murder).
