"We are moving towards rapprochement with Russia because we are
‘fated’ to be partners," President Viktor Yanukovych said at his today’s
press conference for central, regional and international
media. "Prospects of cooperation with Russia are enormous," he said,
noting the growth of trade turnover between Ukraine and the Russian
Federation. "Last year we reached the trade turnover of nearly $42
billion... This year we will have the turnover of $50 billion," Viktor
Yanukovych said.
He noted that one of the priorities of
cooperation with Russia is energy sector. "There are prospects of
cooperation with Russia in the oil industry. It is also interesting for
us. We must have stable oil flow for the Ukrainian system to work... We
need to attract investment to the development of our oil fields," Viktor
Yanukovych added.
In addition, the President of Ukraine
emphasized the importance of cooperation with Russia in machinery,
aircraft and shipbuilding. "Ukraine is interested in keeping our plants
running at full capacity, and only then starting to produce our own
crafts," Viktor Yanukovych stressed. He said Ukraine’s shipbuilding
companies have already received orders for building merchant ships.
At the same time, the Head of State assured that in its relations with
Russia Ukraine will always protect its national interests.
