Russia will participate in modernization of the Ukrainian gas transportation system only when there is a joint venture between Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine for the management of this system, Volodymyr Omelchenko, an expert in energy programs for oil and gas with the Razumkov Centre for Economic and Political Studies, says.

"Russia will participate in modernization of the Ukrainian gas transportation system only when a joint venture of Naftogaz and Gazprom is created," he told a news conference, UKRINFORM reported.

The expert added that "otherwise, Russia has no interest to participate in modernization of the GTS."

On the eve, the Russian gas monopoly board chair, Alexey Miller, said that Gazprom can take to reduce gas prices for Ukraine only on condition of unification with the Naftogaz.

He also said that Ukraine's request for lowering the price of the current gas supplies under the long-term contract will be discussed on July 5, 2011 in Moscow, at a meeting of the Ukrainian-Russian commission for economic cooperation.
