Despite the danger of nuclear power industry, Ukraine very much needs it. Moreover, it is necessary to develop it, in parallel seeking a reliable and safe way to use it. This position was voiced in a comment to UKRINFORM by Borys Stohniy, member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician-secretary of the Physical-Technical Problems of Power Engineering Department, who spoke about the need for Ukraine to use alternative energy sources and energy efficiency technologies.

"If, for example, Germany can afford itself to abandon nuclear energy, to us it is unacceptable," Stohniy says.

Asked about prevention of disasters like Chornobyl or Fukushima, the Academician said: "If you look closely at the nuclear power accident rate, it turns out that accidents are not caused by the reactor itself; they begin in the sector of generator, turbine and internal electricity supply sources. The Chornobyl accident occurred exactly in the electrical part, and the accident at Fukushima-1, too," he said.
