Effective dialog between Ukraine and the Council of Europe will facilitate our country’s successful presidency in the PACE Committee of Ministers, President Viktor Yanukovych said in a statement after meeting Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagand in Strasbourg today.

"I am firmly convinced that the level of current dialogue between Ukraine and the Council of Europe will facilitate Ukraine’s successful presidency in the framework of the Committee of Ministers and carrying out the currently approved agenda," he said.

The President also praised the expert assistance Ukraine receives from the Council of Europe. "It is important that the expert assistance we are constantly provided with by the Council of Europe allows progress in many questions on Ukraine’s agenda. We are very grateful for it, grateful for such fruitful cooperation," Viktor Yanukovych said.

The President noted that since April this year, Ukraine has managed to make progress in carrying out a number of the undertaken obligations. "We have begun moving forward on a number of problems, regarding which Ukraine had commitments made to the Council of Europe. This year, in 2011, we will solve these problems," he said.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe said hearing the news on the progress of reforms in Ukraine was interesting for him. "The Council of Europe will provide all possible assistance to carrying out these reforms," Thorbjorn Jagland said.
