Ukraine is ready to join the development of a modern nuclear safety strategy, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, UKRINFORM reported.

Ministry spokesperson Oleksandr Dykusarov said that "the problems of nuclear safety, which is characterized by a subsequent increase in threats in this sphere at global and regional levels, are in an integral connection with the safe use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."

"It is also worth taking into account the experience of our country in overcoming the large-scale humanitarian and socio-economic consequences of the Chornobyl disaster with respect to safety. This issue has particular weight and special importance in the light of recent tragic events in Japan, where a natural disaster triggered an accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant," Dykusarov said.

The initiative to develop a new nuclear safety strategy given the aftermath of accidents at nuclear power plants was put forward by participants in the Chornobyl conference held in Kyiv on April 19-22.
