"The Azarov government doesn’t exist. Actually, this old and tired man, Mr. Azarov, should be left alone – he is no longer responsible for anything, he doesn’t decide anything, he doesn’t implement any programs. In reality, Yanukovych and his entourage, not the government, decide everything. Yanukovych is responsible for everything. This is my first conclusion," Yulia Tymoshenko said, summing up the first year of Mykola Azarov’s government, Tymoshenko's official website reported.
In her opinion, the current government is trying to make people believe that effective reforms are being carried out in Ukraine and that Viktor Yanukovych is the first reform president. "I think that most people in our country sense this – that there are no reforms. The only reforms they have undertaken are building helicopter landing pads for the president, buying chandeliers for $50,000, building Mezhyhirya’s and, perhaps, some other things related to a knee operation. These are all the reforms that are underway in Ukraine," she added.
Yulia Tymoshenko believes the current government instead of reforms is implementing schemes that allow them to redistribute state property and direct finances to benefit the president’s inner circle under conditions of total economic and social collapse. "Never in Ukraine was there such social and economic collapse, even in the midst of the crisis. Every family today feels that they can’t afford the sharp increase in food prices and other essential goods, can’t balance the family budget because of the sharp rise in prices for utilities and gas. This failure is on the conscience of the unprofessional team and unprofessional environment of President Yanukovych,” she said.
She finds unconvincing the statement by representatives of the government and presidential administration that a year isn’t enough to introduce effective changes that would improve people’s lives. "They have resolved their issues fully. The conclusions made by the world regarding the wealth of key people in the president’s circle, namely the Forbes ratings, show that Yanukovych’s wealth has increased substantially. They managed to improve life for themselves," she said.
The former premier recalled that spending on deputies increased by 900 million hryvnias this year, while spending on the president and his office increased 1.5 times. "This was enough time for the president of Ukraine to buy his son a bank for 100 million hryvnias and pour another 100 million into the statutory fund. This was enough time for the prime minister to transfer, as investigative reports have shown, 150 million hryvnias to his son’s private company. They managed to do it all, but only for themselves," she said.
"The country needs help urgently. Our team doesn’t live by the principle that our opponents followed during the crisis – the worse off the country, the better for them. That’s why I would like to talk about how to help the country in this very destructive time," she said before proposing a concrete plan of action for leading Ukraine out of the economic crisis.
