In an interview in Moscow after taking part in the CIS Summit, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych expressed the belief that constructive cooperation with the Commonwealth meets national interests of Ukraine.

Viktor Yanukovych said that Ukraine has recently somewhat lost its position in relations with the CIS countries, and this situation must be corrected. "We work with our neighbors – the former Soviet republics, at bilateral level and are able to find an agreement. But there are many things that we need to coordinate together. And it depends not only on the position at bilateral level," Viktor Yanukovych said, presdiential press office reported.

He reminded that Ukraine is an export-oriented country, and many of our products are exported to the CIS markets. "These are our traditional markets, which we should at least regain, or better – expand our access to,” Viktor Yanukovych said.

He noted that it also implies diversification of energy sources trade, to be negotiated with the countries of Central Asia and Caspian Basin.

"Our policy is active; we will be defending national interests of Ukraine. I am sure of that," the President of Ukraine said.
