Answering questions at a joint press conference with President Viktor Yanukovych, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan plans to increase the volume of oil supplies to Ukraine, presidential press office reported.
"We have already increased oil supplies to Ukraine. More than a million tons of Azerbaijani oil has been supplied to the Ukrainian market this year. This factor has played a major role in increasing the turnover compared to the last year. In the future we hope to increase the volume of supply, as we plan to increase production and extraction of the Azerbaijani oil," President Aliyev said.
In the future, he said, there is a possibility to supply oil to Ukraine from the neighboring countries of Azerbaijan located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea.
"This project will also facilitate better integration of the Black and Caspian Sea regions. By doing so we create another very reliable energy corridor that will link the Caspian Sea, which is rich in energy resources, to markets of Ukraine and Europe. It will be a large-scale energy cooperation that brings benefit to all," the President of Azerbaijan said.
"I believe this cooperation in the oil transit should play a role of stimulus in the development of the whole complex of relations between our countries in the energy sector. And on the success of this cooperation to some extent will depend the projects related to other areas of energy block, which we have also discussed today," President Aliyev said.
"I believe that year 2010 has become a turning point in this regard. We see it as a good beginning of long-term cooperation," he said.
President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych stressed that all further steps of Ukraine will be aimed at filling the Odessa - Brody pipeline and run it in direct mode.
He said that the fact of increase in supplies of oil from Azerbaijan to Ukraine is very positive. "It is very important for Ukraine that we get oil to our refineries and make them work. Thus we get added value and jobs. It is crucial for Ukraine's economy and has social value," Viktor Yanukovych said.
