Batkivshchyna will monitor the Yanukovych government’s fulfillment of the recommendations outlined in the PACE Resolution "The functioning of democratic institutions in Ukraine", says the party’s leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, BYuT press office reported.

"We, as the largest opposition party, will assume the responsibility for monitoring the fulfillment of all the provisions of the resolution adopted yesterday by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe," Yulia Tymoshenko said during a press conference today in Kyiv, adding that the opposition will monitor the activities of all government institutions.

"We will inform the public of how the Ukrainian government, as well as the Verkhovna Rada, parliamentary opposition and all other participants in the political process are implementing the recommendations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe."

Yulia Tymoshenko underscored that the PACE Resolution is very critical of the Ukrainian government’s actions, which are incompatible with the obligations the state assumed before the Council of Europe.

"The actions by the Ukrainian authorities are incompatible with the strategies and values shared by European countries."

She also said that the opposition will offer the government advice on how to realize the provisions of the PACE Resolution.

"We will give the authorities clear advice on how to implement the Council of Europe’s recommendations – how to amend laws, rules, and regulations so that there is no regression in Ukraine’s democratic development."

"If President Yanukovych and his team listen to the concerns and recommendations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the situation in Ukraine can be fixed and the country can be returned to its democratic path of development. But this requires not just the will of civil society, the people of Ukraine and the opposition – this requires the will of those in power," said Yulia Tymoshenko.
