The current heat in Ukraine is contributing to the formation of high-quality grape yield, Viacheslav Ponomariov, vice president with the Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Ukraine (AWWU), told the press in Kyiv, UKRINFORM reported.

"The overall quality of the crop of grapes this year should be high. The hot sunny summer promotes the formation of a lot of sugar in the grapes," he said. According to his forecasts, Ukraine this year can harvest about 300 tons of grapes.

Anatoliy Koghan, a marketing director for Alef-Vinal LLC, also believes that the current weather conditions in Ukraine have a favorable effect on the grape harvest. At the same time, he expressed concern that in the event of rains grapes can crack and worsen quality.

Winemakers also pointed out that in the winter and spring of this year's weather conditions were not favorable for the formation of the harvest, but losses were small.

Ukraine in 2009 increased the yield of grapes by 13% compared to 2008, up to 468,700 tons.
