The opposition will utilize all legal means to block the ratification process by parliament of the agreement between Ukraine and Russia extending the lease for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet to remain on Ukrainian territory.

"We will use all methods, including blocking the tribune, to prevent the ratification," said Mykola Tomenko, the deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada.

However, he doesn’t rule out that the party in power will try to prevent the opposition from holding an extraordinary session of parliament on April 24. "It’s obvious that the current government team will take advantage of the requirement that this needs to be done within three days….We have precedent - they will start to check the signatures, etc…this will push everything back until Tuesday (the law on ratifying the agreement is planned to be considered during the regularly scheduled session of parliament on April 27)."

"I think the main political battles in parliament will be on Tuesday," Mykola Tomenko said.

The opposition is currently collecting signatures from members of parliament in order to convene a special session on April 24 in connection with the signing of the agreement between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev extending the lease for the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s bases in Ukraine.
