Somali pirates are commandeering the sea-jacked vehicle carrier VC Asian Glory with 10 Ukrainians onboard into the Indian Ocean, UKRINFORM has reported quoting Maritime Bulletin Sovfracht editor Mikhail Voytenko.

Voytenko admits the pirates would use the Asian Glory itself as platform to capture other ships or in order to make the ship-owner pay a ransom.

He also says this is the first case when the pirates took such ship into the ocean and this is very strange and alarmingly.

According to Ukraine's Foreign Ministry, the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Great Britain maintains contacts with the Asian Glory owner as well as staffs of the antipiracy operations Atalanta and NATO.

The ministry officials confirmed that 'talks to free the ship are underway'.

Somali pirates seized the Asian Glory in the Indian Ocean, 600 miles off the Somali coast, on January 2. The vessel is owned by London-based Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd.
