Presidential candidate and current Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko has invited Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych to a televised debate on January 15, 2010.

"Yanukovych has air time on Inter. I was invited to a live broadcast on ICTV. I want to appeal to Mr. Yanukovych. I propose, either on Inter or ICTV, to hold live and honest debates, as are held in all democratic countries," Yulia Tymoshenko said today during a broadcast on Channel 5.

The Prime Minister urged the Party of Regions leader not to be a coward, accept her invitation to debate, and not hide "behind Hanna Herman and their team's other famous fighters."

"People need to assess the candidates' approach to developing a strategy for the state, to complex issues – how everyone responds. I think it will be honest and courageous if Yanukovych agrees to a debate on January 15. I'm ready to come to any channel," Yulia Tymoshenko said.

Under current legislation, January 15 is the last day for election campaigning.

In response to the challenge, the deputy party leader Anna Herman informed that Viktor Yanukovych is not planning to participate in presidential debates with Yulia Yymoshenko. Herman announced Yanukovych's decision, " Yanukovych will not compete in telling lies".

"I'm ready to compete with Tymoshenko in doing good deeds rather than making empty promises," Herman quoted Yanukovych as saying. She also said that Yanukovych's refusal to participate in the television debate with Tymoshenko also concerns the run-off.
