Ukraine remains a strategic partner for the European Union, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said at the 13th Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv on Friday, National radio reported.

He said that the EU is ready to assist Ukraine in conducting democratic reforms and implementing a number of projects, but added that Ukraine is not fulfilling in full its commitments on reforming the country. "It often seems to us that commitments on reform are only partially implemented and words are not always accompanied by action," Barroso said.

He expressed hope that the presidential election in Ukraine would be held in a fair, democratic and transparent way. "We've already got used that elections in Ukraine are held in line with democratic standards," Barroso said. Barroso also stressed the need for Ukraine to return to its cooperation with the International Monetary Fund.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, in turn, said that Ukraine's course for Eurointegration would remain unchanged after the presidential election and that domestic political problems would be resolved. However, he said that "we also need to see political understanding from the EU that we all are politically responsible for the fact that the [Ukraine-EU] association agreement becomes a peculiar example for other countries in the region and Ukraine's neighbors on their way to Eurointegration," Yushchenko said.
