Yushchenko reminded that 68
years ago, on September 29, 1941, the Nazi occupants started in the
Babi Yar mass shooting of innocent people and first of all the
Ukrainian Jews. The President said that the Nazi terror killed more
than 100,000 of our compatriots - Jews, Roma, Ukrainians, Russians and
other nations.
He underlined that the Babi Yar buried prisoners of war
and members of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, thousands
brave patriots, who stood up to the invaders. Yushchenko called on all
Ukrainians to realize their duty and do all the best so that the world
remembers about the Babi Yar martyrs forever.
The head of state said
that the Ukrainian people, who lost millions of their sons and
daughters during the Holodomor-genocide and World War II, strongly
reject any acts and recurrences of the totalitarian ideology,
xenophobia, anti-Semitism, disregard of the human life and
dignity. "The Babi Yar memorial is sacred.
The Ukrainian state will allow no impiety to our compatriots and will take care of a proper protection of this burial site," Yushchenko underscored. He also asked all compatriots to remember about the dead, a horrible price 'we have paid for the right to be free and independent'.
The President laid flowers at a monument in Babyn Yar memorial park and observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
