Yushchenko called the election in October after abandoning attempts to put together a workable governing coalition in parliament.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has said an early parliamentary election he called following the collapse of the ruling coalition could no longer take place this year.

"We have a few issues to solve over the next weeks. It is obvious that organising an early election anytime around Christmas would be unwise," Yushchenko said in an interview published in the Warsaw daily Rzeczpospolita on Wednesday.

"The most important thing is to undertake anti-crisis actions and approve the 2009 budget. The budget should include a line referring to the financing of the election."

Yushchenko, who was in Poland on Tuesday to attend Independence Day celebrations, called the election in October after abandoning attempts to put together a workable governing coalition in parliament.
