From November 18, drivers in Ukraine will have to pay new fines increased by more than ten times. According to Segodnya daily [dated Oct 20, 2008], referring to the State Motor Licensing and Inspecting Department, the new rules join into force in 30 days after their official publication.

According to the newspaper, to put the law into force, the Cabinet of Ministers has yet to adopt more than ten resolutions, and the Interior Ministry has to issue a same number of orders.

In line with the new regulations, an average fine will make 85-100 hryvnias [~$ 20], compared to 17 hryvnias at present. If one does not obey a traffic lights signal, he/she will have to pay 170-204 hryvnias [~$40]. The fine for drunk driving will make 1360 – 2550 hryvnias [~$500].

Traffic policemen believe that the law will be of benefit. In their opinion, many drivers will be frightened off with high fines.
