Ukraine must support the will of the people of
Abkhazia and South
Ossetia to
obtain independence. The Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych declared,
the party press office reported.
According to him, the
recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia is a logical continuation of the
process started by western countries with Kosovo. “In February I expressed my apprehension
concerning the fact that such step would cause a chain reaction. We warned the
world about the danger of using double standards regarding the situation on
recognition of Kosovo independence,” he said.
Yanukovych underlined that recognition
of Kosovo without consent of Serbia destroyed the border order,
established after the World War II.
“Several months passed and
the forecast proved to be right. How should we treat the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Russia? We must act without double
standards. I consider Ukraine must accept the will of the people of
South
Ossetia
and Abkhazia and to recognize their independence,” the statement says.
