42 Members of Ukrainian Parliament have submitted applications to receive apartments in Kyiv.

According to Delo newspaper #138 (652) of August 6, 2008, this information was received from the Verkhovna Rada bodies.

According to the information of the newspaper, to allow these applications, the state will have to allocate around 50 million hryvnias [~10 million dollars]. In line with the law On Status of Member of Parliament, any MP who has no registration in the capital of Ukraine may improve his housing conditions at the expense of state.

Besides, if, due to any reason, a lawmaker does not want to receive a flat, he/she may apply to receive a money equivalent of it. Thus, 8 lawmakers used this opportunity in the parliament of the sixth convocation.

The Verkhovna Rada office has refused to provide the newspaper with information about surnames of the lawmakers who applied to receive flats or a money compensation. Officials referred to confidentiality of this information. Besides, they also refused to disclose the date when the lawmakers will receive apartments, their precise cost, and the amount of pecuniary compensations.

As of today, an apartment in prestige districts of the Ukrainian capital, where lawmakers are usually settled, costs not less than US $2.5 thousand for a square meter. Lawmakers mostly receive three-room flats, not less than 100 square meters by average area. Thus, the purchase of apartments for 42 lawmakers in Kyiv may cost not less than 50 million hryvnias.
