Ex-president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma considers that neutrality is optimal for Ukraine. He said that today in an interview, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

Answering the question on Ukraine’s accession to NATO, Kuchma noted that his position concerning this issue is unchanged – he stands for active cooperation with the Alliance. “So Russia does,” he added.

At the same time Kuchma considers that decision on membership in NATO must be adopted at National referendum. “Personally I would vote “against”, he said.

However Kuchma noted that he supports membership of Ukraine in the EU. According to Kuchma, it is necessary to come to Europe, having solved three main tasks in Ukraine: functioning state, competitive economy, formed nation and national identity.

According to Kuchma, such integration foresees active not only western but also eastern policy and also intensified cooperation with Russia. Ukraine, separated from Russia with “Chinese wall”, is not interesting for the EU.
