Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Maud de Boer-Buquicchio congratulates Ukrainian authorities on their action to improve the rights of children.

“I should like to congratulate the Ukrainian government for the package of amendments, contained in draft law 1224, and aimed at improving the rights of children in Ukraine. I welcome this particularly as it is a concrete follow-up to the ratification by Ukraine of the Council of Europe Convention on Contact concerning Children precisely a year ago. I hope that the Verkhovna Rada will act quickly and put these changes into law.

Changes to several laws concerning children’s rights also follow the adoption of the national action plan for implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child until 2016 in June this year. The sustained and comprehensive effort of the Ukrainian authorities to translate the Council of Europe standards on children’s right into specific legislative and administrative action represents an excellent case of national implementation of the Council of Europe Programme “Building Europe for and with Children”, she said.
