A regular meeting of the Sub-commission for Security and Defense of the Joint Intergovernmental Ukraine-Russia Commission will take place November 18-19, First Deputy Defense Minister Leonid Polyakov of Ukraine told. Leonid Polyakov participated in the 53rd CIS Defense Ministerial in Astana, Cabinet's press service reports.

Ukraine as an observer takes part in regular meetings of CIS Defense Ministers, he recalled. "We sign no documents, make no statements on participation in multilateral format, we just become acquainted with agenda and focus on bilateral cooperation," Leonid Polyakov stressed. This time, the Ukrainian delegation met with counterparts from Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Belarus and Moldova.

"When negotiating with the Russian delegation headed by Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Army General Nikolay Makarov, we discussed the agenda, defined date and time for a regular meeting of the Sub-commission for Security and Defense of the Joint Intergovernmental Ukraine-Russia Commission," he noted.

Asked about the topic of future talks, the First Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine said the parties meant to consider issue of implementation of the AN-70 joint project, coordinate and sign a plan for military technical cooperation in 2008. According to Leonid Polyakov, the plan envisages exercising more actions up from 2007. "We also dwelt on the issues related to cooperation in utilization of surplus rocket fuel. Ukrainian and Russian experts found new approaches to address the matter, the parties realize that both countries need this," he said. Furthermore, Leonid Polaykov said the parties intended to intensify bilateral cooperation in military field, notably it will be a question of joint exercise, and use of firing ranges etc.
