Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych met with former U.S. State Secretary Colin Powell and discussed the Ukrainian-American relations.
Viktor Yanukovych noted progress in relations between Ukraine and the USA at international level. At the same time the Head of Government emphasized the importance of personal relations between leadership of the countries. “The more we know each other, the better we understand,” the PM said, "Cabinet" press service reported.
Viktor Yanukovych told Colin Powell about the changes which had occurred during three years since their last meeting. In particular, the Head of Government told that Ukraine is building a new model of public administration – parliamentary-presidential. “Undoubtedly, we understand that any reform, political in particular, could not be carried out in one year. This reform, first of all, is to reach the people’s consciousness. Building of a balanced democratic system of power is of top priority for us today,” the Prime Minister stressed.
During the meeting Viktor Yanukovych emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s accedence to the WTO and carrying out of structural reforms for speeding up economic growth and attracting investments. “We have adopted all necessary laws for the WTO’s accedence, some insignificant issues are to be solved,” Viktor Yanukovych noted.
Colin Powell noted economic development and democracy strengthening in Ukraine since his last visit to Ukraine in 2005. “I am pleasantly impressed that Ukrainian democracy develops and demonstrates maturity. I am impressed with showings of economic development”.
The sides have also discussed prospects of the European and EuroAtlantic integration of Ukraine and deepening of the Ukrainian-American dialogue.
