President Victor Yushchenko on Saturday opened the 37th International Film Festival Molodist in Kyiv, describing it as an “extraordinary event” in Ukraine’s cultural life, president's press office reported.

“Ukraine wants to demonstrate its place in the interesting, difficult and wide world in such a way. This is our touch to the cinematographic art. This is our Ukrainian participation in it,” he said.

He added that films played an important role in shaping our outlooks and values, thanking those artists that create “top-notch movies.”

The president said Ukraine’s film industry followed the traditions started by Oleksandr Dovzhenko and Ivan Mykolaychuk. “I want to wish this festival to be successful for our film industry,” he said.

Yushchenko presented the Scythian Deer lifetime-achievement award to the famous Iranian film director and head of this year’s Molodist jury Mohsen Makhmalbaf and then watched a performance, The Mystical Ukraine, and Jos Stelling’s film Duska.
