President Viktor Yushchenko met with his Portuguese counterpart, Anibal Cavaco Silva, in Lisbon on Thursday. The two leaders spoke about Ukraine’s EU prospects, president's press office reported.

Yushchenko told reporters after the meeting European Union membership was one of the strategic priorities for his country. “We value this dialogue and the job that has been done by Ukraine and the European Union in formulating principles and fundamentals of a new [enhanced partnership] agreement,” he said.

The president said Ukraine and most of its European partners understood one another quite well and added that he was going to broach the EU enlargement subject during today’s summit of the European People’s Party. “Ukraine will again bring up this subject to find partners …in the EPP and in other countries, including Portugal,” he said.

Yushchenko thanked Anibal Cavaco Silva, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates and his government for supporting Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union. “We feel this support. We felt it when Portugal held the EU’s rotating presidency previously and feel it during the ongoing presidency,” he said and added that he was “very optimistic” about the development of ties between Ukraine and Portugal and about Ukraine’s new agreement with the EU.
