President Victor Yushchenko on Wednesday visited the Lesya Ukrayinka State University in Lutsk.

Yushchenko said in a speech he had recently issued a decree to grant this establishment national status, describing it one of the nation’s prominent “supreme schools.” He said he was visiting the university to show he is not indifferent to how Ukraine’s youth is educated and added that the state must reconsider its educational policy and create favorable conditions for students. “When we speak about education, we speak about special challenges,” he said, president's press office reported.

Yushchenko said Euro-Atlantic integration was Ukraine’s greatest ambition and challenge today. “Our march to Europe is not an intention to have a cornucopia. We must roll up our sleeves and fight for Ukraine’s place, for Ukraine’s prospects,” he said.

He said Ukraine and the European Union had signed an agreement to ease visa rules and were engaged in talks to sign a free trade agreement and unify their air traffic regulations. He assured the students Ukraine would soon join the World Trade Organization.

“Only democracy can produce Ukrainian prospects,” he said and added that unity was the sole “winning formula" for Ukraine'sdemocratic forces.

President Yushchenko had laid flowers at the Taras Shevchenko monument in Lutsk before he visited the university.
