European neighbourhood policy can’t be a base for relations of Ukraine-EU. The Ukraine's Ambassador to the EU Roman Shpek said that yesterday in Brussels in scope of international conference dedicated to European Neighbourhood policy (ENP).
"The official position of Ukraine on the ENP was defined by President Viktor Yushchenko in 2005 in the European Parliament," Shpek said. "The President pointed out that the ENP cannot be accepted as an adequate base for EU-Ukraine relations. Ukraine can only perceive objective policy that considers Ukraine as an integral part of European continent," he noted.
According to Shpek, Kyiv pays much attention to development of bilateral relations and signing of new agreement on cooperation and partnership that will soon change the acting agreement.
Moreover, Shpek noted that proposition of European Commission concerning ENP are new not for Ukraine but for such countries as Moldova, Georgia, Armenia and maybe for countries of Northern Africa.
He noted that Kyiv is waiting for concrete propositions concerning strengthening of regional cooperation, in Black sea region, in particular.
The ambassador finished his speech with a quote from the previous European Commission president, Romano Prodi, who told an EU summit in 2003 that "the best instrument" to facilitate reforms in other countries was a prospect of EU membership.
