The Government of Viktor Yanukovych has no program to improve social standards, Pavlo Rozenko, head of the social policy department of the Presidential secretariat, said at a press briefing on Wednesday, President’s press office reports.

Rozenko said President Victor Yushchenko had urged Ukraine’s social Ministers to formulate a social and educational strategy for 2007-2008 at a meeting last March.

“The President said he was ready to support their ideas aimed at developing the social sector together with the Government and parliament,” he said, adding that the absence of such a program showed that the social Ministers “lack competence.”

Rozenko reminded reporters President Yushchenko had insisted that the Cabinet must not cut social spending during last year’s “heated” budget debates.

“No social initiative was put forth,” he said and addedthat the Government, on the contrary, had wanted to pay less to the country’s employed pensioners and mothers, and make the living wage lower.

Rozenko said the Government’s GDP and inflation projections for 2007 had proved inaccurate. While the Presidential Secretariat believes Ukraine’s GDP will be UAH 860 bln this year, the Government insists it will be UAH 810 bln. “We have UAH 50 bln to implementthe President’s social policies,” he said.
