The legislation of Ukraine doesn’t allow Trans-Carpathian rusyns to be a separate nationality. Head of State’s committee on nationality and religion Georgiy Popov sated at a press conference in Kyiv.

“As the Head of the State organ I answer that it is not defined in our Ukrainian legislation who and in what way establishes nationality,” he said.

At the same time, Popov said that rusyns can obtain the status of ethnic minority. “If next general census of population occurs, than we will decide. We have no other mechanisms,” he said.

Popov didn’t note when next population census will be.

As a reminder, earlier Ukrainian ombudsman Nina Korpachova had addressed to the Government with a request to confess rusyns as separate nationality.

Rusyns, who live in Trans-Carpathian, from the moment of formation of independent Ukraine, have been trying to obtain the confession of their nationality.
