Ukraine wants the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to work more systematically, President Victor Yushchenko told reporters on Sunday after an informal summit of the CIS leaders in Saint Petersburg, the President's press office reports.

Yushchenko said Ukraine had submitted its proposals – “a serious package which is, in fact, alternative” – to draft a concept on CIS development today. “We have agreed that Ukraine will know whether its proposals have been accepted or rejected by the next summit in October.”

Yushchenko said the leaders had agreed to focus their attention on resolving a particular issue every year. “[…] the next twelve months will be spent in dialogues on migration,” he said, adding that it was necessary to unify migration laws throughout the CIS as well as social and pension standards, especially for the veterans of the Great Patriotic War. “Such initiatives are the second step we will initiate within the Commonwealth.”
