President Victor Yushchenko on Thursday met with Moldova’s Foreign Minister Andrei Stratan, president's press office informed.

“We regard the relationshipwith Moldova, our partner and neighbor, as very significant,” said Yushchenko. “Today we are ready to discuss ways to intensify our relations. It is really necessary.”

They spoke about how to build closer ties between the two countries. Yushchenko said Ukraine was interested in developing cultural and humanitarian cooperation with its southwestern neighbor.

“The size of the Ukrainian minority in the Republic of Moldova makes it important to sign an interstate agreementon the observance of minority rights,” he said.

Yushchenko and Stratan exchanged views on how to settle the conflict in Trans-dniester. The Ukrainian leader insistedit should be resolved peacefully and with respect for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as stated in the Ukrainian Settlement Plan.

They also discussed Moldovan President Voronin’s future visit to Ukraine.
