Victor Yushchenko on Monday met with Borys Paton, President of the National Academy of Sciences, and Ihor Yukhnovsky, Director of the National Memory Institute. He said public leaders and nongovernmental organizations could play an important role in resolving the country’s ongoing political crisis, president's press office reported.

“There are times in Ukraine when its intelligentsia should be half a step ahead and show the nation ...how to settle this or that situation,” he said, expressing confidence the deadlockwould be resolved through constitutional and democratic means.

Yushchenko reiterated his belief early elections were the best way to resolve the crisisand added that it had been caused by imperfect and hasty constitutional reforms, introduced in the fall of 2004.

“I am convinced we must learn very proper lessons from this situation,” he said.

Yukhnovsky and Paton informed him about results of today’s roundtable to resolve the crisis, which had involved political and public leaders.
