“We are glad that the government of Ukraine has eventually admitted [ in Prime Minister Yanukovych’s speech to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe ] that it is its priority to fight corruption,” said Vitaly Hayduk, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, on Wednesday, president's press office reported.
He expressed hopes the cabinet of ministers will not just speak about the problem but will also act to back President Victor Yushchenko’s bills aimed at uprooting corruption and building an independent judicial system in the country.
Hayduk said the government “has not demonstrated any resolute steps in this direction so far.”
“The cabinet of ministers is apparently reluctant to implement President Yushchenko’s anti-corruption concept. In February, the government practically deranged a meeting of the Security Council planning to consider these anti-corruption measures,” he said.
He added that the president had proposed anti-corruption bills last September, but the ruling coalition put them away as unimportant. Haiduk believes it also shows that the government and its coalition block these initiatives, "very actively usurping power through unconstitutional and corrupt means instead."
“Ukraine’s president believes that every day we lose on the way to fight corruption costs our country and society too much,” he said.
