Victor Yushchenko has called on world leaders to recognize the Great Famine of 1932-1933 (Holodomor) as genocide against the Ukrainian nation before the 75th anniversary of the tragedy, President's press office reported.

“As President of Ukraine, I am calling on you to support a United Nations resolution to condemn Ukraine’s Holodomor and parliamentarians from all over the world to declare the Great Famine of 1932-1933 an act of genocide against the people of Ukraine,” he said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that it should help prevent genocides in the future.

Yushchenko said Ukraine appreciated the solidarity and support of the international community.

“Our state is thankful to Australia, Georgia, Estonia, Canada, Lithuania, Poland, the United States of America and Hungary, whose parliaments have recognized that famine as genocide.”

In another statement to Ukrainians living all over the world, the President praisedtheefforts of the Ukrainian World Congress Committee for the Observances of the 75th Anniversary of the 1932-1933 Great Famine and said its work, aimed at promoting Holodomor awareness, should helpeach Ukrainian citizen and each citizen of the world forever remember “those millions of innocent people tortured to death.”
