Ukraine and the European Union may sign a new base agreement on cooperation at the first half year 2007. Volodymyr Vecherko the co-chairman of the Committee of the parliamentary cooperation Ukraine-EU told on the results of the 9th committee session.

Vecherko informed that the first session of the expert council on this document preparation is planned for beginning of March. “I hope at the first half year 2007 this agreement will be signed,” Vecherko said.

In her turn, the deputy chairman of the Ukrainian committee Natalya Prokopovych stands for precise terms of this agreement.

According to Prokopovych, it would allow to raise a question on membership of Ukraine in the EU when the term of this agreement expires. The member of the European parliament Adrian Severin reminded that validity term of the current agreement between Ukraine and the EU expires in 2008, and he expressed the hope that by this time a new agreement will be signed.

He also hopes that a new agreement will be more substantial and significant than the previous one. Severin also noted that such document will allow getting all necessary instruments for reforms strengthening in Ukraine.
