Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych held a telephone conversation with EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson. The interlocutors have discussed the topical issues of Ukraine-EU cooperation. In particular, the matter concerned Ukraine’s accedence to the World Trade Organization and prospects of creating free economic zone Ukraine-EU, “Cabinet press office” informed.

The Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine’s accedence to the WTO is a priority of foreign-economic policy and system factor of the national economic development, liberalization of foreign commerce. According to Viktor Yanukovych, this will promote creation of the predictable transparent circumstances for foreign investors.

“We appreciate the EU support and assistance in the preparation of our state for the WTO entrance”, the Head of Government stressed.

The Prime Minister noted that the Government is ready to initiate negotiations with a view to concluding a new Agreement on creating free economic zone between Ukraine and the EU.

In the Prime Minister’s opinion, the prospective free economic zone is to cover not only the goods but also the services and capital flow as well as provide for harmonization of technical standards and enhance cooperation in energy, transport, telecommunications. Only under such conditions the creation of free economic zone will be an efficient instrument of Ukraine’s integration into the EU Domestic market, Viktor Yanukovych said.

According to the Prime Minister, the consultations conducted in 2006 and at the beginning of 2007 have contributed to achieving a common view on the format, structure and substantial substance of the prospective free economic zone.

In his turn, Peter Mandelson emphasized that the European Union is interested in deepening cooperation with Ukraine, solving all issues in this way.
