Victor Yushchenko has met with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in Munich for talks that focused on Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration, president's press office reported.

The President reiterated that NATO membership was our strategic goal and said the country’s leading political forces must compromise on the issue. He reassured Mr. Scheffer Ukraine would continue taking part in peacekeeping operations of the alliance, including the Active Endeavor counterterrorism program.

He thanked the Partnership for Peace Trust Fund for helping us destroy and recycle weapons.

“I hope you will provide more funds to carry out this project,” he said.

The President promised to promote greater awareness of NATO and its activities in Ukraine. He said the government was going to spend USD 1 mln on this project in 2007 and thanked the alliance for being ready to join the campaign.

“I am sure together we will be able to refute old myths and stereotypes about NATO,” he said.

The President invited Mr. Scheffer to visit Ukraine in July.
