Andriy Klyuyev and Andris Pibalgs held a meeting within the framework of the second visit of the European Commission Representative for Energy Issues to Ukraine and continued the high-level dialogue between Ukraine and the European Community. Temporary Authorized Representative of the EU Delegation in Ukraine Dirk Schubel and Representative of Ukraine to the EU Roman Shpek also took part in the meeting, Cabinet press office reported.

One of the topical issues of the meeting concerned opening the second stage of building of gas-measuring unit in Boyarka supported by the EU technical aid (grant 8,1 billion euros). This metrological service should become the most updated in Eastern Europe a model basis for measuring carbohydrates –gas, oil and oil products.

The sides had stressed the importance of gas-measuring unit as one of the promising common projects of Ukraine and the European Union in energy.

Andris Pibalgs reported that next year the European Commission intends to increase investments within framework of energy cooperation with Ukraine and emphasized the necessity to strengthen the role of Ukraine as a reliable energy transit country and exporter of electricity.

From his part Andriy Klyuyev confirmed Ukraine’s intention to make serious steps toward increasing its own energy competitiveness. Vice Prime Minister assured that Government means to promote implementation of scaled investment projects. First of all it concerns – reconstruction of the gas transport system of Ukraine, building transmission facilities with the purpose of increasing energy export, reconstruction of thermal generation, increasing brown coal extraction.

“We have already presented a number of reasonable and promising investment energy projects to the Ukrainian banks and agreed upon their crediting”, Andriy Klyuyev told.

Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine and European Commission Representative for Energy Issues discussed a possibility for the European banks to participate in crediting Ukrainian energy projects.

A problem of nuclear energy security was also discussed during the meeting. “A top priority task for the Government of Ukraine is a reliable and safe functioning of nuclear electric power stations”, Andriy Klyuyev underscored. He had stated the position of the Government regarding implementation of projects at the Chornobyl NPP: we need a new safe confinement built within set time and allocated funds.
