Victor Yushchenko met with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun in Seoul for talks focusing on economic, military, scientific, humanitarian, educational and cultural issues, president's press office reported.
A Korean delegation will soon visit Ukraine to reinforce military ties between the two countries.
“This concerns military technologies and specific parameters of military equipment,” explained Victor Yushchenko.
Speaking about a defense cooperation agreement Ukraine and South Korea signed on Monday, the President said: “We have reached an understanding in the issue. And so the signed agreement will be a political acceptor of agreements that will provide basis for formulating a short-term action plan when the Korean delegation is in Kyiv.”
Another plan will be worked out for a Korean delegation that will be in charge of peaceful space exploration. Yushchenko said today’s agreement “opens a new page in technical cooperation between the two countries, including business contacts.”
The President praised economic cooperation between Ukraine and South Korea, adding that the import/export rate was USD 851 mln in 2006.
The two leaders agreed to start operating regular scheduled flights between Kyiv and Seoul. South Korea will not object if Ukraine opens and uses this route unilaterally.
They also discussed ways to liberalize visa rules and recognize educational diplomas and scientific ranks, and spoke about ethnic Koreans living Ukraine, especially how to regulate their social status and improve their living standards.
Yushchenko also broached the Holodomor issue and said he would try to persuade Korean parliamentarians tomorrow to recognize the Soviet-era famine in Ukraine as genocide. He asked his colleague to support Ukraine’s intention to adopt a UN resolution on the famine.
Speaking about cultural relations, they agreed to hold a week of the Ukrainian culture in Korea and of the Korean culture in Ukraine. Yushchenko also promised to support Korea in its bid to host an Expo international exhibition.
