Victor Yushchenko has met with the leadership of Ukraine’s intelligence agencies to address their problems, evaluatetheir performance in 2006 and set clear objectives for the future.
“I want to improve your achievements,” he said.
The President insisted that it was necessary to create a national commission to reform the country’s security service (SBU). He also said it would be expedient to formulate a program to develop Ukraine’s intelligence agencies and create a Presidential Office for Military Formations.
Mr. Yushchenko said Ukraine must also develop military cooperation with its partners.
He said the issue of national security was of “great significance” now. He commissioned NSCDU Secretary Vitaly Haiduk and First Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Arseniy Yatsenyuk to prepare bills on the issue.
Border Service Head Mykola Lytvyn, Internal Intelligence Office Head Mykola Malomuzh, SBU First Deputy Chief Valentyn Nalyvaychenko, Defense Ministry Intelligence Office Head Oleksandr Galaka, and Head of the Presidential Committee on Military and Technical Cooperation and Export Control Yuriy Tereshchenko were present at the meeting, “President press office” informed.
