Ukrainian-Helsinki union on human rights nominated General Office of Public Prosecutor (GPU) for the award “Weed of the year 2006” for the grossest violation of human rights. Chairman of the union Evhen Zakharov told at a press conference in Kyiv.

In particular, he noted that GPU has won the nomination “The most information closed body of the power.” Zakharov stated that there is no open access to normative bills of GPU; the most number of refusals in getting information and non-reaction to informational inquiries can be observed in GPU.

The award “Weed of the year 2006” was also given to State department of Ukraine on execution of punishment. The department does not have independent complaint system against official of the department; it does not react to numerous cases of group suicide and complaints about cruel and inhuman treatment of prisoners.

Zaharov also noted that the reward was given to SBU and Office of Public Prosecutor for illegal deportation of 11 Izbeks, seeking for political asylum in Ukraine on February 14, 2006, and to Office of Public Prosecutor of Alchevsk in Lugansk region for systematic and the most demonstrative inactivity in case of violation of human rights because of repeated denial to conduct independent investigations of cruel treatment in police office.

In his turn the chief executive of the union Volodymyr Yavorsky marked that the competitive commission with participation of six officers of the union had declared these nominated candidates unanimously. “Celebration” of the prize-winners took place for the first time this year.
