Victor Yushchenko has met with bishops representing the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, president's press office repor.

They spoke about relations between the government and churches in Ukraine and the role of the Roman Catholic Church in our country.

The President said his government treated all churches that reinforce morality and promote unity equally. He believes the cooperation of the government with religious organizations is vital for the spiritual revival of the nation.

Yushchenko said Ukraine was eager to develop the European dialogue of tolerance and mutual spiritual support. He remembered Pope John Paul’s visit to Ukraine, adding that it was really important for our country, which is an integral part of the European spiritual and cultural civilization.

He said, last June, he had sent a letter to Pope Benedict XVI with an invitation to visit Ukraine.

The President and the bishops spoke about problems of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, especially how to resolve them.

Cardinal Maryan Yavorsky, Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Ivan Vasyunyk and Head of the Office to Preserve Cultural Heritage Ihor Likhovy were present at the meeting.
