Deputy Secretary of National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Serhiy Pirozhkov does not exclude that Russia may reduce gas supplies to Ukraine. Pirozhkov told journalists during the session of a roundtable “Ukrainian-Russian relations in the new European architecture.”

“Agreement about 130$ per one thousand cu m of gas is valid for a certain period only – for the year 2007. This issue has not been agreed for future trends. Russia feels like increasing gas production and considers expansion of both European and Asian markets. All these may influence gas supplies to Ukraine,” Pirozhkov said.

He also underlined that dependence on only one source of supplies threatens national security. Pirozhkov is convinced there will be no reduction of prices for energy carriers, but increase is quite possible. That’s why Ukrainian enterprises must get ready and introduce energy-saving technology.
