If Ukraine fulfills an enlarged basal agreement on partnership with the EU, Kyiv may count on associated agreement with the European Union, German Ambassador to Ukraine Reinhard Schaefers told a roundtable into Ukraine - European Union relations, the Cabinet's press office reports.

Creating a free trade area is supposed to be included into the enlarged basal agreement on partnership. However, the Ukraine - EU Summit, slated for late October in Helsinki, is not supposed to deal with Ukraine's EU perspectives. Still, successful implementation of the new basal treaty may lead to new status of Ukraine in relations with the European Union, both from the juridical and practical points of view. "It will be a new Ukraine, the European Union will change, too. The membership issue will appear in completely new perspective," the diplomat said.

According to Mr Schaefers, the EU can propose Ukraine, in line with the enlarged basal agreement, integration tools within the framework of sector programs.

On January 1, 2007 Germany will receive presidency in the EU from Finland.
