In an interview for the Handelsblatt, Germany’s leading financial daily, Victor Yushchenko has said Ukraine should start joint projects with the European Union to demonstrate its capabilities.

“We should start concrete joint projects involving Ukraine and Europe to produce energy or biological diesel, or to construct aircraft and ships. These projects can be the proof of Ukraine’s importance to Europe and also of Europe’s sincere interest in our country. Then the discussion about the terms of our integration will be different,” he said.

The President said Ukraine was looking forward to hearing clear membership signals from Brussels, adding that the actual date was unimportant, the president press office informed.

“We do not demand that they tell us when we shall join the EU. But our people want to know where this path leads,” he said.

President Yushchenko characterized the challenges the European Union faces after its enlargement as a “necessary but temporary phase.”

“These problems must not make us lose our great ambition of politically uniting the whole continent,” he opined.
