According to Coal Industry Minister Serhiy Tulub, the Ministry intends to construct five new coal mines, one in each coal mining region, that is, Luhansk, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Volyn regions, Cabinet's press office reported.
This year, he said, 346mln UAH has been allocated to construct the Novovolynska No 10 Coal Mine in the Volyn region, which is the first to be commissioned.
On September 8 the Coal Industry Ministry imposed a moratorium on shutting down coal mines where stocks of coal warrant further extraction.
There are 164 operational coal mines in Ukraine, 93 percent of which are state-owned. Ukrainian coal mines are expected to extract 80.6 mln to 81 mln tons of coal in 2006.
