Victor Yushchenko has opened a European Cup rally in Yalta.

At the opening ceremony its participants commemorated victims of a gas leak at the Zasyad’ko coal mine in Donetsk on Wednesday.

In his speech, the President said Ukraine was honored to host the rally. He added it was a perfect chance for our guests to explore the country and for Ukraine to prove it deserves to be a member of the European community, the president press office informed.

“I would like to say again: this event is a tiny contribution to Ukraine’s European aspirations,” he said, noting that over sixty teams would take part in the race.

Addressing the national team, Victor Yushchenko said the whole country would support them.

“The strongest team will win today but I want the Ukrainian team to be among the strongest,” he said. “Ukraine is ready to regularly host such competitions. We are ready to spare no effort to hold this competition without any problems.”

Deputy Chief of Staff Viktor Bondar attended the ceremony.
